Projects and possibilities in Northeast Michigan
Development, expansion, growth.
Lately, these seem to be a common theme here in Northeast Michigan.
Whether discussing the Decorative Panels International property or a strip of land along the water, Alpena officials are thinking and planning ways to better the area. They know the potential it can hold and want to utilize it efficiently.
We’re glad to see that ideas and concerns are being bounced around between the officials and community members. It’s important that we’re not only addressing development possibilities but also taking into account how locals are feeling about each project and what they hope to see.
On Dec. 18, News staff writer Steve Schulwitz reported the rezoning of the DPI property. The Alpena Municipal Council voted to update the zoning ordinance from heavy industrial to waterfront and mixed-use.
Despite knowing it will take years before the property will be transformed, we’re excited to see officials and community members already planning for the future. Talks of parks, businesses, trails, and more fuel the possibilities of the rezoned property.
On Thursday, Schulwitz reported the Alpena Downtown Development Authority is discussing ideas for how to utilize the riverfront property at the corner of 2nd Avenue and Water Street.
Though a proposed project is still moving forward to occupy the land, pop-up shops to support small businesses and creating a market space are on the DDA’s radar as they try to utilize the vacant land before construction begins.
And, on Wednesday, Schulwitz reported the Michigan Department of Natural Resources drafting plans for a state campground at Rockport State Recreation Area. Though the draft is far from final, the DNR is taking into account local residents’ concerns while planning an expansion of Rockport to potentially bring in tourists as well as give the community more to do.
No time is being wasted in trying to better and expand the community and the opportunities it presents.
Hopefully these projects and more will conclude, whatever the outcome may be, and new ones will grow as development continues and Alpena welcomes an array of possibilities.
