Freel scores 22 to lead Hurons past Onaway
ROGERS CITY — Nick Freel continues to provide the Rogers City boys basketball plenty of offense as the junior poured in a game high 22 points and led the Hurons to a 58-49 victory over Onaway on Monday.
Onaway led at the half, but as has been the story this season for the Cardinals, they surrendered a lead and struggled to put four complete quarters together and allowed Rogers City to outscore them in the final two quarters, including a 20 point fourth quarter by the Hurons to come away with the win.
J.D. Ellenberger finished with 18 points for the Hurons as Rogers City’s duo of Freel and Ellenberger combined for 40 points on the night.
Onaway was led by Jager Mix who scored 19 points. Austin Nash added 14 points and Kevin Pearson chipped in with 13 points in the losing effort.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Oscoda 46,
Tawas 38
TAWAS — Izzy Hulverson provided a spark for the Oscoda girls basketball team on Monday as she poured in a game high 22 points in the Owls’ 46-38 win over Tawas.
Lauren Langley finished with 11 points and Macy Kellstrom added seven points to help Oscoda improve to 13-3 overall on the season.
The Owls will travel to Rogers City on Thursday for their next matchup.
Alcona 46,
Whittemore-Prescott 31
LINCOLN — The Alcona girls basketball team won its sixth consecutive game with a 46-31 win over Whittemore-Prescott on Monday.
The Tigers were led by a balanced scoring effort as Megan Grove paced Alcona with 11 points, Kelsey Hansen added 10 points, Rachel Layton finished with eight points and Anna Loyer chipped in with seven points.
“We had a hard time getting going and Whittemore played really hard in the first quarter,” Alcona coach Mark Feldhiser said. “We recovered in the second quarter and came out really strong in the third tonight. We didn’t play our best, but we got the job done.”
The Tigers improve to 11-3 overall and will travel to Mio on Thursday.
Rogers City 55,
Mio 47
MIO — The three ball was key for the Rogers City girls basketball team on Monday as the Hurons drained nine threes and held on for a 55-47 victory over Mio.
Kylie LaFleche poured in a game high 22 points and hit six of Rogers City’s nine threes on the night. Kyrsten Altman finished with 11 points and Karissa Rabeau chipped in with nine points.
“Our shooting was good tonight and it really helped us get going,” Rogers City coach Duane Pitts said. “We had to hold on late after Mio cut into the lead, but our shooting led the way for us tonight.”
The Hurons are now 4-10 overall on the year and will host Harbor Springs on Wednesday.
Fairview 30,
Hale 29
FAIRVIEW — The Fairview girls basketball team edged Hale on Monday, winning by a final score of 30-29.
Jaedyn Winton scored 12 points and Kaitlyn Bowers added 10 points as the Eagles held on to win a game which was a back and forth battle all night.
Fairview is 6-8 overall and will travel to Hillman on Thursday.
BOWLING
The Alcona Lady Tigers Bowling Team traveled to Vista Lanes in Oscoda on Saturday to compete against the Bay City All Saints Cougars.
The Tigers split the baker games but came out on top with a total of 259 to Cougars 244. Alcona stayed strong and swept the team games with a total of 1,499 to All Saints 1,266. Final scoring Alcona 23, All Saints 7.
High game for Alcona goes to Isabella Bates with a 193 and high game for All Saints was Chelsea Potvin with a 149.
In the second match Alcona faced the Oscoda Owls with the Owls sweeping the baker games with a total of 415 to the Tigers 294. For the team event the Owls stayed strong and swept the team games with a 1,552 to the Tigers 1,406. Final scoring Oscoda 26, Alcona 4.
High game for Alcona was Samantha Nordstrom bowling a 173 and high for Oscoda was Tamryn Young with a 199.
In the third match Alcona was to face the Charlton Heston Patriots, but due to illnesses they were unable to attend. Alcona bowled a baker total of 274 and a team total of 1,540. Final scoring Alcona 30, Charlton Heston 0.
High game for Alcona was Brielle Keyser with a 202.
Alcona’s next game is February 8, 2020 when the Lady Tigers will travel to Hi Skore Lanes in West Branch to take on Whittemore Prescott Cardinals and the Charlton Heston Patriots.
